Cairns Saints Australian Football Club
Overview
ODIN360 was engaged by Cairns Saints Australian Football Club and AFL Cairns to develop a Strategic Sport Facilities and Growth Plan that supports the club’s sustainable growth over the next 25 years. The work considered immediate facility constraints, future venue opportunities, tenure arrangements, operational sustainability and the needs of a growing senior, women’s and junior football program. Through stakeholder engagement, facility benchmarking, site reviews and options analysis, ODIN360 delivered a practical pathway for the club to strengthen its facilities, increase participation capacity and plan with confidence for the future.
Key Deliverables
  • Completed a detailed review of Cairns Saints’ current facilities, tenure arrangements, operations and growth ambitions.
  • Undertook stakeholder engagement with Cairns Saints, AFL Cairns, Cairns Regional Council, Cairns Cricket Association, Cairns Basketball, government representatives and other key facility users.
  • Assessed current and future opportunities at Griffiths Park, including shared use arrangements, access, changing facilities, lighting, player performance facilities, clubhouse capacity and commercial rights.
  • Benchmarked Cairns Saints against other AFL Cairns clubs to identify gaps in facility provision, governance, access and revenue opportunities.
  • Examined alternative and complementary facility pathways and potential training venues in the Cairns region.
  • Developed a Facility Decision Matrix to support future choices using criteria such as tenure, access, growth capacity, facilities, revenue, governance and risk.
  • Prepared an action plan covering lease renewal, Master Plan advocacy and improvements, temporary facilities, alternative pre season access and club operational capacity.
  • Provided a staged pathway that supports immediate needs while positioning long term facility opportunities, subject to future delivery and lease arrangements.
Outcomes
  • Provided Cairns Saints with a clear, evidence based framework to guide facility and growth decisions.
  • Identified practical short term actions to improve pre season access, facility use, tenure conditions and support for women, girls and junior football.
