Australian Business Events Association :
Creation of New Industry Association, Start Up Strategy , Governance and Financial Model
Overview:
In 2022-2023, ODIN360 was engaged by the Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) to develop a sustainable business model for the business events industry. Through extensive consultation and analysis, ODIN360 recommended creating a new national association to unite the industry. This led to the establishment of the Australian Business Events Association (ABEA) in 2023.
Deliverables:
- Comprehensive stakeholder consultation across the industry
- Analysis of existing industry bodies and structures
- Proposed governance model and organisational structure
- Draft mission, vision and values
- Membership model and financial projections
- Implementation plan and roadmap
- Advocacy strategy for government support
Outcomes:
- The recommendations and strategy developed by ODIN360 were implemented in full.
- ABEA was successfully established in July 2023, uniting key industry bodies
- The association is operating successfully, in line with budget projections
- ABEA held its first national conference in 2024, attracting over 1,000 attendees
- The Australian Government has recognised ABEA as the peak body and “one voice” for the business events industry
- ABEA has secured initial government funding to support its establishment and key initiatives
- Membership has grown steadily, surpassing initial targets
- ABEA is delivering on its core functions of advocacy, research, industry development, member services and promotion
- The association has implemented state chapters and special interest groups to ensure broad representation
- ABEA is now leading coordinated advocacy efforts at federal and state levels
This case study demonstrates how ODIN360’s strategic consulting and stakeholder engagement united a fragmented industry to create a stronger, more influential peak body. ABEA’s successful establishment has positioned the Australian business events industry for future growth and impact.
